The civil Town of Meteor was founded in 1919 and is comprised of all 36 sections of Wisconsin's Congressional township 37 North, range 8 West in Southern Sawyer County. It is reported the Town was named Meteor after reports of a space meteor crashing in the township. During the period of 1890 to 1910, the population of the Town of Meteor was based on the lumberjacks who worked in the area. They lived in temporary homes which were deserted after the timber ran out. The railroad was removed in 1910. The village called Meteor was located in the vicinity of the school in section 16. A general store, post office, saloon, and rooming house operated as services to the lumbermen. A large log landing was located near the railroad tracks.
Today, the Town's population is 182 and has been growing since the 1980 census. It is projected that in 2030, the population will reach 224. A substantial potion of the town (24.6%) is age 19 and younger. That number drops significantly for persons aged 20 - 24 with only one person.
